Sylvanus Hayes d 3 January 1874

Sylvanus Hayes was born 7 August 1794 in Hanover, NH.  He was the 6th of 8 children of David and Lydia (Merrill) Hayes, also written as Hase.  His birth record is actually listed as “Venus Hayse.” 

He married Margaret Patterson in Henniker NH on 4 march 1823.  The 1830 census of Orford lists Sylvanus Hayes, age 30-40, with female same age, and one male under 5.  Their son William Patterson Hayes was b 1828 so this should be him.

1840 census of Hanover lists Sylvanus Hayes in Orford.  The ages of the children match up to the two sons, William and George, as well as Almeda Waterhouse, their adopted daughter.  Sylvanus and Margaret also had an infant who died in July 1834 in Orford.

The 1850 census, the first to list all names in the household, shows Sylvanus Hayes, age 55, with wife Margaret, sons William P and George.  Almeda was married the year before to William Hall.  Also in the household was Augusta Woodbury, age 10.  Sylvanus’ occupation was listed as farmer. 

1860 census of Hanover lists Sylvanus Hayes, with his wife and sons William and George.  His farm was valued at $3000, and his personal property at $2150.  Also in the household is Arabella Turner, domestic.  Three years later, Arabella married William.    

1870 census of Hanover lists Sylvanus Hayes, Margaret, and George Hayes, now living in the household of William Patterson Hayes.  The men are listed as farmers.  William and Almeda E. Hall are nearby, according to census numbering.  I don’t know if William took over the farm of his father.  His farm is valued at $3000 and his personal property at $830. 

Sylvanus Hayes died Jan 3, 1874, age 79.  He shares a headstone with his wife Margaret, who died eleven months later.  They are buried at Greensboro cemetery in Hanover.  That cemetery was established in 1790.
