Mehitable Williams died 5 April 1876

Mehitable Williams was born 31 Aug 1799, in Plainfield NH, the seventh of nine children of Job and Alice (Clark) William.  All nine of Job’s children were listed, with birth dates, in Job’s Revolutionary War pension records.  Mehitable’s father ran a tavern in the early 1800’s.

I have recorded that Mehitable married Daniel Franklin Blood in Bradford VT, on 17 March 1835.  However, I do not have a source for that information.  In addition, her first two children seem to have been born before that date – Edwin in 1830, and George in 1833.  At least two more children were born – Alice in 1837 and Daniel F in 1841.

I have still not been able to find Daniel and Mehitable in the 1840 census. Some time before 1850, the family seems to have broken up.  I still have not found Daniel in that census.  Mehitable was living in Plainfield with the Sanborn Davis family.  She had no occupation listed.  Edwin, age 20, was in the Plainfield poor house.  Sons George and Daniel are unaccounted for.  Alice, age 11, is living with William and Anna Demming in Cornish.

I have no records for Mehitable’s husband Daniel, no birth, marriage, census, death, or divorce, so I do not know how her marriage ended.  Mehitable remarried to Joel Royce on 7 August 1852.  Joel was from Vermont, but had lived in Cornish, and was a widower with grown children.

In the 1860 census Mehitable is with Joel “Rose” living in Reading, VT.  Next door is the family of her son George, with his wife Sarah, and daughter Mary.  Joel was a farmer, with real estate valued at $600, and $400 worth of personal property.  The census also shows that Mehitable had $200 worth of personal property.  I found this interesting because just 10 years earlier, one son was at the poor farm and her other children were living elsewhere.  I had not previously noticed a wife with her own personal property value recorded in the census.

In 1870, Mehitable and Joel lived in Cornish. He was listed as a farmer, but neither of them had a recorded value of real or personal property.  Also in the family was David Royce, age 49.  Family relationships were not recorded in the 1870 census, but perhaps this was a son from Joel’s first marriage.

Joel died 27 March 1875 in Cornish.  Mehitable died a year later, 5 April 1876, in Plainfield.
