Grace B Hayes b 2 Jun 1877

Grace B Hayes was born 2 June 1877 in Hanover NH, the second of four children of George W Hayes and Mariette (Minnie) Blood.  She had an older sibling who was stillborn in 27 February 1876, a brother Frederick born 29 May 1879 who died at age 17 months, and a younger sister Sadie born 6 June 1881 (later known as Daisy Hall).

In 1880, Grace lived with her parents and brother in Hanover.  Her father was a farmer.

Grace married  Austin I Simmons on 30 October 1894.  He was the son of Richard Simmons and Ellen Dean.  Their son Ralph Austin Simmons was born 26 November 1895 in Lebanon.  In 1900, Grace, Austin, and Ralph lived in Camden, Maine.  Austin was a weaver in a woolen mill.  They lived next door to Grace’s mother Minnie and Grace’s stepbrother Clarence Royce.

Grace’s father died in 1906.  The following item was in the Feb 22, 1906 Thursday issue of the Hanover Gazette Etna section: George Hayes, formerly of the east part of town, died at Boscawen on Wednesday of last week.  His daughter, Mrs. Simmons, was in town this week, and says it is not decided yet as to the interment, whether it will be at her home in Penacook, or the remains to be brought to Etna and placed beside those of his immediate relatives.

Grace and Austin divorced, with a decree issued 7 April 1908.  Austin initiated the suit, based on desertion and refusal to cohabit.

Grace married Arthur Vinica on 14 October 1910 in Nashua NH. This was his third and her second marriage.  They were counted in the 1910 census in Providence RI, with her son Ralph, and Arthur’s son Howard.  Arthur was an electrician.

The family was counted in the 1915 state census for Rhode Island.  They lived in East Providence at 26 Freeborn Avenue.   Grace and Arthur were listed in the 1920 census at the same location.  Arthur was an electrician at an electrical works, Grace did not have an occupation listed, and their sons had moved out.    Grace and Arthur adopted a daughter they named Ruth, who was born 26 September 1924 in East Providence.  The family was counted in the 1925 state census.

Grace apparently maintained contact with her New Hampshire relatives, as we have an undated photo of Grace with someone identified as her grandchild.  It was in an album next to a photo dated 1920, so probably this is a 1920-1930 vintage photo.  The child could be granddaughter Norma born 1917, or adopted daughter Ruth born in 1924.

Grace, Arthur, and Ruth still lived at 26 Freeborn in 1930.  Arthur had changed occupations and was now an auto mechanic.  Grace’s mother died in 1934, and Grace was the informant for the death certificate.

City directories for East providence list Grace and Arthur in 1946.  He was a custodian at the Town Hall.  Arthur died 7 April 1950.  Grace was listed at 26 Freeborn in the 1953 and 1957 directories.  She died 7 Aug 1957 in East Providence.
