John Clare Hodges m Lillian Webber 6 June 1911

John Clare Hodges was born 18 February 1871, the son of John Henry Hodges and Mary Jane Murphy.  He was known as Frank, and had at least one older brother and sister.  His father was a farmer, and they lived in the Aylesford area of Nova Scotia.  The family was counted in the 1891 census in Millville.

Frank married Margaret Gertrude Joudrey on 2 Nov 1895 in New Germany, Lunenburg County, NS.  He was listed as a farmer from Millville.  She was the spinster daughter of Joshua and Bessie Joudrey.  As the name implies, Lunenburg County had a lot of settlers from Germany, while Kings County was predominately English/American.

Frank was listed in the Nova Scotia directory for 1896 as a farmer in Millville.  He and Gertrude had four children:  Lamont “Tom” born in 1897, Hazel born in 1900, Inez born in 1901, and an infant who was born in 1904 and died at age two months.

The family was counted in the 1901 census on Ormsby Road at Aylesford.  Frank was working as a farm laborer.  Gertrude died in January 1905, just after her fourth child was born and died.  I do not have a cause of death for her, but perhaps it was related to child birth.

By 1907, Frank was employed as a railway section man in East Chester, in Lunenburg County.   In the 1911 Canada census, Frank was boarding with the Whitford family in East Chester.  He had his three children with him.

Lillian Webber was born 11 July 1878 in St Margaret’s Bay, Nova Scotia, daughter of John and Amelia Webber.  She had previously been married to James Webb, and had three children, Rena born in 1902, John in 1904, and Burton in 1907.  James Hebb died in 1908 in Halifax NS.

On 6 June 1911, Frank married Lillian Webber Hebb at Chester Basin, NS.  He was 40, Baptist, a trackman, living in East Chester.  Lillian was 33, Baptist, also residing in East Chester.  I do not know if Frank and Lillian had children together.

I do not have a death record for Lillian.  Frank remarried and was listed as widower, but I don’t know if that refers to his first wife or second.  On 23 November 1929, Frank married Agnes Sophia Stevens, widow of John Zink.  The Zinks had been neighbors of Frank’s family in the 1911 census.  The marriage record indicates that Frank worked as section man for the railroad, and lived at 257 ½ Maynard Street in Halifax, and he could read and write.  Agnes was born in East Chester, daughter of George Stevens and Agnes Howboldt.  She also could read and write.  Frank and Agnes had no children together.

Frank died 26 December 1931 in East Chester, at age 60.  His cause of death was intestinal hemorrhage from unknown cause.  He was a laborer doing road work.  He was buried at Chester.

Agnes died 31 January 1961 in East Chester at the age of 88.
