Annie Hooper Hodges born 18 July 1881

Annie H Hodges was born 18 July 1881 in Marblehead, MA, the third child of Stephen Taylor Hodges of Nova Scotia, and Mary Elizabeth Orne of Marblehead.  Her father worked in the shoe-making industry.

Annie’s family was counted in the 1900 federal census in Haverhill MA.  Her father’s name was incorrectly recorded as Samuel, but we can match the family group to the members we know.  Mary’s mother Sarah, and brother Charles also lived in the household.

Annie married Henry Augustus Horton on 19 September 1905 in Haverhill.  Besides being recorded in town records which are available at, this was also reported in the 1905 Haverhill city directory.  Henry was a shoemaker, born in Delavan, IL, son of John R Horton and Amanda Miller.

In 1910, Annie and Donald lived with his parents at 42 Kenoza, in Haverhill. Their house had been built in 1850.  Henry worked in a shoe factory, his father was a janitor.  They had two children, Donald born in 1906, and Lora born in 1907.    They lived at the same location in 1920.  Annie’s husband was a stock fitter in a shoe factory.  A stock fitter appears to be someone who operates a machine to join, decorate, reinforce, or finish shoes and shoe parts.

By 1923, the family moved to 5 Shapleigh Avenue. This house was newer, built in 1900.  In 1927 and 1928, they lived at 40 Mechanic.  The family moved north and in 1930, lived at 68 Claremont Avenue in Manchester NH.  Henry was a foreman at a shoe factory.  They rented their home for $23 per month, and the family owned a radio.  The children were no longer at home.

Annie and Henry moved back to Haverhill.  From 1938 to 1944, they lived at 15 Claremont street.   By 1948, Henry was listed as a stock fitter, and they had moved to a new home at 28 Golden.  According to the entry on Find-a-Grave, Henry died in 1950 and is buried in Bradford MA, at Elmwood Cemetery.  Annie died in 1967 and is buried there as well.

Their son Donald died in 2007 at age 101.  Daughter Lora died in 2005 at age 97.
