Chester Baker married Susan Pollard 10 August 1852

Chester Baker was born 8 April 1808 in Norwich VT, son of Lott and Mary “Polly” Sheppard.  In 1820, Lott’s family lived in Norwich.  I was not able to find Lott in the 1830 census.

In 1840, Chester was the head of the household in Pomfret VT.  There were four sons under the age of 10.  Family member names were not recorded in 1840 but using death records of his children, I was able to identify his first wife as Louisa West.   Chester’s children from his first marriage identified so far are William (1833-1891), Alonzo (1835-1910), Henry (1840-1912), Nahum (1842-1909), and Walter (1848-1919).

Susan Pollard was born 21 April 1822 in Bridgewater VT, daughter of David Pollard and Avis Woodward.  She married Earl Sanderson probably around 1841.  They had two children, Rowena (1842-1902) and Stephen A (1845-1909).  They were counted in the 1850 census in Bridgewater.  Susan’s mother Avis was in the family, as were Cytha and Zeptha Pollard.

I was not able to find Earl Sanderson in the 1860 census, nor find a death record for him.  I suspect he died.  Susan married Chester Baker on 10 August 1852 in Bridgewater.  They were counted in the 1860 census in Bridgewater.  Chester worked as a day laborer.  Susan’s two Emerson children, Rowena and Stephen, were called Baker.  Alonzo Baker was also in the household.  Rowena married her stepbrother Walter C Baker (son of Chester and Louisa) on 20 Aug 1870 in Pomfret.

Chester and Susan had four children together:  Wallace (1853-1925), Hiram (1856-1923), Louisa 1858-?), and Caroline (1862-1919).  Wallace, Hiram, and Caroline are with their parents in 1870 in Bridgewater.  Louisa is missing.  Chester was a farmer whose real estate was valued at $200, and personal property at $100.

Susan and Chester still lived in Bridgewater in 1880.  Chester was a laborer, and Susan kept house.

Susan died 8 October 1899 in Windsor of capillary bronchitis.  In 1900, Chester was living with his daughter Caroline Sloan in Bridgewater.  Chester died 28 December 1901 in Bridgewater of a cerebral hemorrhage.
